Gili Islands

The Gili islands consist of three tiny islands northwest of Lombok’s coastline. The three islands are Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.

The islands are renowned for their seclusion which offers visitors a private and remote experience like no other. Each of the three islands has a number of resorts to cater for the thousands of visitors here each year.

More importantly, none of the islands permit motorised vehicles, so the common method of transportation is cycling and walking. Visitors may also get the chance to be taken around in a horse-drawn carriage locally known as a ‘cidomo’. It is the epitome of relaxation on an enchanting island, away from life’s daily challenges.

The abundance of coral reefs makes snorkelling and diving popular activities on Gili Islands. You will also find a number of boat tours available which will take you out to the best reefs where you will be able to see plenty of marine fish and even a few turtles!

Gili Trawangan is the biggest of the three islands, and offers spectacular views at sunset. It is the most popular of the three islands for tourists and has the most resorts, bars and restaurants.

Gili Air is the second largest of the three islands, and is located nearest to Lombok. Its prime location makes it extremely popular with honeymooners as well as those in the quest for a quiet getaway. Turtles are easy to see on this island and scuba diving is a popular water activity here.

Gili Meno is home to excellent swimming beaches and used to be used for seaweed cultivation. The presence of a bird sanctuary on the island makes it ideal for bird watching and quiet walks through natural landscapes. Other activities available on the island include fishing and coconut harvesting.

The Gili Islands are, collectively, a magnificent place to enjoy a vacation in Bali. Public ferries transport visitors to Southwest Lombok from where you can take a taxi to the harbour, and finally a speed boat to any of the three islands. Alternatively, you can fly from Bali to Lombok and take a short ferry ride to the islands.
