Besakih

Besakih is one of the key destinations in Bali and attracts travellers from across the world. It is home to the Mother Temple, one of the main attractions here.

The history of the location can be traced back to the mid-20th century following the eruption of Mount Agung. The flow of lava undoubtedly caused a lot of damage, but it is a wonder that it missed the Mother Temple by a whisker. The locals deemed this to be a miraculous sign, hence the esteem of the village as holy grounds.

The main attraction in Besakih is the Mother Temple. The temple is believed to have been built before 1000AD as a dedication to the dragon god with the same name. Today, the Hindu temple is an intricate complex of temples that attracts visitors from all corners of the world. With close to 100 temples, it is easy to see why many visitors would take a pilgrimage to this location. Make sure to use the services of identifiable professional tour guides, and also to wear the correct attire. For the latter, sarongs and sashes are available both for hire and for purchase.

The village is surrounded by lush greenery on the slopes of Mount Agung. Visitors can go mountain trekking, although this is a demanding exercise that requires a certain level of fitness. As Bali’s highest mountain, Agung offers spectacular views of Besakih and the surrounding regions. Head to the peak at sunrise to reward yourself with breathtaking views and celebrate another accomplishment. Get accommodation at either Kintamani or Kuta as there are few options close to the temple.

The easiest way to get to Besakih is through Klungkung, although there is a road that leads up from Kintamani. This is a scenic drive as it leads through dense forests, charming villages and rolling fields. Bemos (shuttle buses) are also available and the best time to catch these is in the morning.
