In the early 17th century, the temple was destroyed and remained in that state up until the 20th century when it was reconstructed. The temple’s rich history makes it a popular attraction in Bali.
Pura Luhur Batukaru is home to a unique shrine that is perhaps the most prominent attraction. This shrine contains a meru tower with seven distinct levels. The shrine was constructed as an offering to the god of Mount Batukaru, the Mahadewa god.
As one of the sacred locations in Bali, visitors need to be aware that several sections of the temple remain inaccessible for the purposes of religious festivals held through the year. Even with that, the temple is the first stopover for visitors who would like to trek Mount Batukaru.
An annual pilgrimage to the peak of the mountain has many Balinese Hindus go up the summit all at once, and is one of the major events at the temple. Should your trip coincide with this yearly pilgrimage at Pura Luhur Batukaru, make sure you go along to marvel at the dedication of the locals.
The entrance fee is around 20,000 IDR and visitors must ensure that they wear a sarong to cover knees and ankles. Also, make sure that shoulders and midriffs are covered.
